Trail Riding

Get off the beaten path and experience Vieques the way locals do; from the back of a smooth-gaited Paso horse! Everyone will tell you, there is no better way to explore the wilder side of our island.

Vieques "Island" horses are direct descendants of registered Paso Fino horses; however, over the years, other breeds have been introduced to the island herds. Crosses with predominately Thoroughbreds, Quarter horses and Arabians have produced a unique type of gaited horse. Known for their willingness to please and gentle nature, Esperanza Riding Company's horses are perfect for first-time riders, vacation riders and children alike. For the more advanced rider, our well-trained Pasos' natural Brio (Spanish term for a horse's energy and enthusiasm) is an experience you won't want to miss.

Trail Rides

Consist of a guided two-hour ride through the hills, open meadows, river bottoms and beaches of the Esperanza area. We begin at a walk, but quickly move up to the paso (a smoother version of the trot), followed by some cantering (especially up hills!). We offer rides at 8:00 am and 4:00 pm; to avoid mid-day heat. The cost is $65 per person, cash only. Reservations are required and don't forget your camera!

For those more experienced horse enthusiasts, that would like to spend more time in the saddle, please inquire about our longer (3.5-hour) ride. In this case, we head west through La Hueca, stroll down a few different beaches, inspect the old Navy bunkers, and visit historic sugar mill ruins. The cost is $85 per person, cash only.

Due to the small stature of our steeds, we have a weight restriction of less than 230 pounds. Although we do not have a strict minimum age limit for our trail rides, we do suggest our younger riders be physically capable and/or have at least some experience in the saddle.

Also, please dress for the occasion. Long pants and closed-toed shoes that stay on your feet are advised. Appropriate attire is recommended for the following reasons: COMFORT (flourishing thorn bushes will threaten you from the edge of the trail and saddle vs. bare legs isn't always pretty) and SAFETY (you don't want to worry about your high-heeled sandal falling into the ocean instead of paying attention to riding your horse!).

Pony Rides

For small children, under parental supervision, we offer a hand-led "mini trail ride" on our most docile horses. The cost is $15 per child for a 20 minute tour of our beautiful waterfront pasture. Offered at the conclusion of our morning trail ride. Please contact for scheduling.
